It's a popular place for the locals. It's a feed store/cafe. They have American, New Mexico and European food. The hours are 9-2pm. When you pull up, you feel like you are going to brunch at a friend's ranch. It looks like a residence with peacocks and turkeys roaming around. The interior has a similar feel with an eclectic vintage decor, wooden walls and fireplace. We went for breakfast so we got chai, coffee and their famous European cinnamon buns. It was heavenly. The ambience is part of the cafe's charm. Will be back for more!

Just noticed I didn't put second part. Just as wonderful as 2 years ago. Only regret was that this time we are staying in Belen and it is too far to go to once a week. They work with me and my food allergies. Everything is made fresh to order and the food is seasoned wonderfully. Just remember they close at 2 not 6.... The feed store closes at 6.

A fun restaurant, set in a working ranch. The food is fabulous, and we were entertained throughout our meal watching peacocks strut their stuff outside the windows. The restaurant is rustic, and reminds you of an old style roadside cafe. But don't be fooled by the "rustic" - I found the food to be absolutely fantastic, the cook is a 1st class chef. It's located about 12 miles outside of Santa Fe.

Stopped in today after many a time of driving by. Today was not good day to stop because the production crew of Starwars (filming nearby) was coming for lunch. We begged for a table just for coffee and pineapple upside down cake (YUMMY) and they let us in! HA! We'll go again and hopefully will be let in for lunch! More to add to this review when we have real food.

Not the kind of place you'd seek out but the kind of place that is a local favorite because it is the only place to eat for miles. It has it's charm, nestled into a working feed shop, surrounded by peacocks and turkeys, and the kind of place where you tolerate the mediocre food and poor service because you know the people there. As for the food, it's an odd and limited variety. They push the cinnamon rolls, which are pretty good. The crepes are pretty bad, and everything else seems to vary from visit to visit, sometimes the bacon is limp, sometimes it's so well done that it shatters. The service is inattentive, I almost always have to ask for silverware, refills on water, and today I asked for coffee twice and never got it. There is nothing truly terrible about the place but it's not a place I'd visit if it were not the only place around.

Wow. Beautiful space. Friendly staff. Easy to find and park. And the food! The food is great. Go go go. You will love it and be back!

Fun & Tasty San Marcos Café was hopping at brunch time on a Sunday morning when we stopped in. They were able to squeeze us in, which was appreciated. There was a fun and festive buzz about the place. We had a nice, late breakfast and everything was real good. We enjoyed their famous cinnamon rolls which are more like croissant batter rolled up and stuffed inside a muffin wrapper. The chicken sausage was tasty and the toast that comes with breakfast was real good. The coffee was strong and poured regularly. A guitar-playing singer set up and added to the already great atmosphere.

This place was recommended to us so we thought we'd give a shot. It's so quaint and rustic, a little off the beaten track but worth the drive. The staff are wonderful, on the ball, warm and friendly. You feel like you have just walked into someone's house out on the ranch. The menu is extensive with something for everyone and after perusing it we gave to 'Ready' look and the waitress appeared straight away. First up she asked if we'd like one of their complimentary home made straight out of the oven cinnamon buns. Of course we said yes...lol. This was worth the drive itself. So after deciding what I wanted of course I ask her what's popular and of course I changed to one of her recommendations. I had the Feedstore Breakfast Burrito with a fried egg and Peter had the Red Chili Stew. The burrito was fabulous, egg cooked perfect. It was so yummy. Peter's no lightweight with spicy food but it was even too spicy hot for him. I think he used the word Napalm to describe it...lol. The waitress could tell he was struggling and asked if he would like something else so he ordered a 3 egg omelette with some green chili on the side. He said it was perfect and the green chili was perfect as well. As we were leaving we noticed the peacocks in their eclectic garden. This is a special little place, put it on the list of places to try when you're in Santa Fe.

I used to go out here with my family for mother's day as a child and loved being able to run around the peacocks, turkeys, and chickens...I don't know any other restaurant like it. I have recently started going again because their feed store burrito is WICKEDLY delicious. Chile is always on point, great bacon, and tantalizing potatoes. Absolutely delicious food with a laid back ambiance. Also, they have this gorgeous waitress (I think maybe the owner's daughter?) Whose eyes twinkle like sapphire stars and has a smile that will make you want to stay till they kick you out.

Wonderful place. A little bit outside of Santa Fe, San Marcos Cafe is like an oasis. Surrounded by peacocks, chickens, turkeys and other animals. It's like being invited to someone's house and farm. Very cosy cafe, the original room, and the newer edition of the building, a sunroom with the view of the peacocks and the back. It's a cute place in the country, attached to a feed store and solar powered. Great food, environment and service. The cinnamon buns are very good, to die for. The coffee is also very good and continuously flowing, into my San Marcos cup. The red chile is very flavorful and the perfect heat. And, the cherry on top is when the fireplaces are going. It's a must. The drive to this great cafe is beautiful as well.

So, your on the Turquoise Trail looking for a place to satisfy your need for local, homemade, satisfying food? There are not many places to get just that (and your starting to feel like you are in the middle of nowhere and when will you ever see civilization again?) well, friends....just keep driving to a beacon of culinary delights...The San Marcos Cafe and Feedstore! I am basing this review from my visit there just 2 weeks ago. This place is pretty much a local hangout and above mentioned oasis for lost tourists on the Turquoise Trail...but CHILE HEADS...where are you? This is one of the TOP places in NM to get x-mas on your "feed store" burrito. I don't stray off this favorite too often (maybe once in a while I will get the fresh made biscuits and gravy, but that is rare) the burrito is just satisfying in every way! Start with a warm flour tortilla, stuff with real hash browns (not the icky shredded kind) and thick bacon, roll up and smother with plenty of awesome red and green chile, top with cheese and bake in the oven to melt all that goodness together...serve with garlic bread, just enough to sop up all that chile! DELISH! The coffee is excellent too! Service is prompt and attentive and as many of the fellow reviewers have mentioned the setting is pretty great too. As far as hours go, I think they are only open until 2pm every day...best to call ahead to be sure...and if it is a weekend a reservation is recommended...this place can get very busy! Its a cafe in front of a legit working feedstore...where you can stock up on all your farm and ferrer needs. Birds and unique country feelings are boundless. **I do admit I am a bit biased as I worked here a student in high school...and have loved the food for many years. High school for me was over 15 yrs ago...San Marcos cuisine is pretty much the same since then, 5***** for consistency! **

Food here are amazing! The green chili stew is a "must try"...if you can handle the spicy food. They have some roosters and turkeys at the back and...a beautiful peacock. But watch out for the "turkey attack"!

First visit this morning for Sunday breakfast. I thoroughly enjoyed the special - New Mexican crepe. Had with red Chile. The Chile was rich dark red with complex flavors. Excellent. The service could have been a tad more attentive but this was a very minor issue. There was a nice fire going in the raised kiva fireplace and also a very warm stove. Very homey. Turkeys and peacocks roamed outside. We will return!

Driving along 'Route 66' on our way to Santa Fe....see a lovely little house and a sign that says Cafe. Sweet. We could all use a nice cup of coffee. Pull into the parking lot and immediately I'm in love. Live peacocks in the driveway...normal, loud exterior that screams Adobe, and of course out in the middle of nowhere. We make our way into the little shop/eatery and sit down a great homey table. All we wanted was some coffee....which by the way was French pressed and absolutely the MOST delicious homemade coffee I've EVER had. Trust me, I drink a lot of coffee. I did notice a lot of other people enjoying what they were eating...everything from hamburgers to tacos to vichyssoise (random). Servers were so adorable and absolutely delightful. They also have some cute little chachkis to buy (ex. coffee mugs, postcards, local paintings....etc). If you are driving from Albuquerque to Santa Fe, drive the scenic route, its the only way you'll find this place. It's wonderful. Loves.

Hands down, the best cinnamon rolls I've ever had. Really good homemade food; casual, relaxed setting; no frills, friendly service. Humorous mix of real and faux farm life. Looking out a window I see a real peacock curled up next to a faux lamb. How funny is that? Makes me smile just remembering.

Perfect setting, perfect service, perfect food. I cannot wait to go back! I was visiting my brother for a long weekend of work/fun in the Albuquerque area. He lives northeast of the city in Sandia Park, and when I found I would be free on Sunday, he immediately made plans for us to have brunch at San Marcos Cafe. What a wonderful morning! We made the beautiful drive mid-morning, and enjoyed the view of the snow in the high desert and on the mountains. We drove through Madrid and on to San Marcos. My brother was worried we would have a wait, but we got a table in about 10 minutes. The hostess told us to walk around and see the birds while we waited, and we LOVED the beautiful peacocks and the white peacocks, turkeys, roosters and chickens. The time of year (March) wasn't great for their whole outdoor area; my sister-in-law says it is much more beautiful and interesting as the weather warms. We were seated at a charming table in the main dining area (as you walk in). My SIL says that the room with the fire place is very lovely and cozy (if you reserve, maybe you'll want to ask for it). Right away, the waitress asked me if we were having cinnamon rolls. My brother said, "Absolutely." I was glad he did. They are a specialty of the house, which I would not have selected on my own, but they were amazing. Large, buttery, and delicious! I enjoyed one with my coffee while I considered the menu. It's not extensive, but it has offerings that are diverse. I almost went for the cheese blintzes (they are a weakness of mine), but I got up and looked at the specials board and decided I should choose the Eggs San Marcos, scrambled eggs wrapped in a just-crispy-enough tortilla with beans and guacamole. It was EXCELLENT! I was so glad I went with a strength of the house! My brother ordered the eggs Benedict, and my SIL got the chicken enchilada, which she absolutely raves about. RAVES. She says, and I agree after a taste, that their chicken tastes like nothing else. Very tender, perfectly seasoned, maybe even a little smokey. It's one of her favorite things to eat, and I can see why. If you have a chance to dine here, do not miss it. This place is the real delicious deal. You'll see, and you'll thank me.

What a great place to start a day in New Mexico. Have a wonderful breakfast. The staff and food are outstanding and the coffee is hot (along with the chile sauce). Being a farm guy it was neat to wander about the grounds and also went back to the feed store to visit. A recommended stop, but if you want pavement and neon just keep heading to Santa Fe.

You could describe this place as out of the way because it's not near any cities. It's on the Turquoise Trail between Albuquerque and New Mexico near the town of Cerrillos. You can't really call it a secret, though, because it's mentioned in every brochure describing the area, making it seem like a bit touristy, but I still got the feeling that a lot of people there were locals. In any case, it had a nice crowd for a weekday lunch, and it's not as if there was an office park across the road. The decor could be called quaint. Or cozy. As a male, I would call it "tiny" and "tight." Outside there are live birds walking around, most notably a peacock. And, in addition to being a cafe, I think there was an actual feed store there. Menu is kind of similar to what you might find at a tea house, fused with traditional American and some New Mexican. You have the standard enchiladas, some sandwiches, and then a whiteboard filled with daily specials. Things like salads, quiche, and various home cooking like pork chops and eggs.

My husband and I are in Santa Fe for Memorial Day weekend. We took our tandem bicycle on the "Prison Loop" ride today. The San Marcos Cafe appeared at lunch time. How lucky were we? This lovely, cozy cafe not offers outstanding breakfst, brunch, and lunch but it sure was nice to enjoy the beautiful peacocks and baby chicks just outside our window during lunch. The service was friendly and helpful. Food was home cooked and delicious! Thanks for filling all our water bottles. A perfect little gem to help us finish our ride into Santa Fe!

Ouch. The rube locals think this restaurant is the best, but in the 5 years I've had the displeasure of going here.. Not so much... It's quaint, and pretty much the only restaurant that has survived in the surrounding area forever... But one must theorize that the bulk of the customer base is people who are buying the chicken scratch in bulk behind the restaurant. The sandwiches are poorly constructed. The new mexican cuisine is hardly passable as edible, and the service is, well, not good. On at least two different occaisions I've found "mystery" ingredients in my take out orders, and you'd better phone in those orders at least an hour beforehand if you want anything warm in a bag to go...

When we visited New Mexico last week, the trip to the cafe here was the culinary highlight for me -- unexpectedly so. We were staying in the small rural town of Los Cerrillos, which is about 25 minutes south of the edge of Santa Fe, and the San Marcos feed store and cafe is just about the first sign of civilization as you head into Santa Fe proper. The cafe was recommended to us by the people who owned our guest house in Cerrillos, since there are some fun animals out behind the restaurant for my son to see and run around with -- an emu, chickens, roosters and peacocks. They are only open for breakfast and lunch, and serve a limited menu of classics (eggs, hash, etc.) and then some Mexican specialties for lunch. From what we understood, the place has a pretty good rep among the locals, and they're almost demanding reservations on Saturdays and Sundays now. I had the San Marcos burrito, which was stewed beef and potatoes wrapped in a tortilla and smothered with green chile sauce (a must within the state of NM) and cheese. Goddamn that was good. My husband had ordered the corned beef hash with an egg over-easy on it, and that came out overcooked, but I'll overlook it since the burrito was so damn good. We had a fabulous, local, character-of-a-waitress who was great, and they have a nice patio off the main dining room with open windows and such. Definitely your local's joint, and not swank in any way, but just good honest local flavor and food. If you're looking to get out of the central part of town and take a short drive out, it's located out on the edge of south Santa Fe on Highway 14, or the "Turquoise Trail."

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
